MOZAMBIQUE: DEMOCRACY, GOVERNANCE AND HUMAN RIGHTS Zimbabwean crisis is discussed in The crisis that has developed within the Government of National Unity (GNU) in Zimbabwe meets today in Maputo, the "troika" of national defense and security of of the Southern African Development Community (SADC), led by President Armando Guebuza. The summit will consider a report by a mission mandated to assess the situation there, where the inclusive government is in serious danger of break down due to disagreements between the President Robert Mugabe and Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai. The summit of the troika of the organ that integrates Mozambique, Zambia and Swaziland, will seek ways to help the Zimbabweans to reach consensus on the items that block progress in implementing the agreement which established the GNU in Zimbabwe under the mediation of SADC. The Troika has decided to invite to this meeting in Maputo, the Presidents of South Africa and Democratic Republic of Congo, Jacob Zuma and Joseph Kabila respectively, as well as the president of the regional organization, Tomas Salomao, however, yesterday announced his unavailability. http://www.jornalnoticias.co.mz/pls/notimz2/getxml/pt/contentx/912539 Police sends contingent to former RENAMO bases The Mozambican police will send a contingent to the ancient bases of the former rebel group of RENAMO in the province of Nampula, after threats of a new war in the wake of the election results. About 300 former RENAMO guerrillas, who fought in the 16 years civil war against the government of FRELIMO, threatened this week at a press conference back to take up arms if their leader (Dhlakama) accepts the results of the last week general elections. Dhlakama says that his votes were stolen in the Island of Mozambique, and his people were barred from voting in Angoche, which is enough to consider that the elections were not transparent. Meanwhile, speaking yesterday in Nampula, Dhlakama argued that he did not say that he would ignite the country, but that Mozambique would burn. O Pais. 5th November, 2009 Mozambique in the debate on climate change With a view to identifying long-term measures to respond to adaptation needs of developing countries to the impacts of climate change, began on Tuesday in Barcelona, Spain, the last session of negotiations on the new international climate change regime, which should be adopted in Copenhagen (Denmark), during a conference on the subject to be held from 7 to 18 December. Among those detained was an agent of the prison guard assigned to the Central Prison.O Pais. 5th November, 2009 Maringue: Gunman exchange shots with the PRM Police of the Republic of Mozambique (PRM) stationed in Maringue, in Sofala, exchanged shots with one of the former guerrilla of RENAMO stationed in the former headquarters of that movement.
